Hi‘iaka, the Hawaiian goddess of hula, healing, and chant, is known for her deep connection to nature and her role in sacred storytelling through dance. She is the beloved younger sister of Pele, the fiery volcano goddess. Though opposites in temperament—Hi‘iaka calm and nurturing, Pele passionate and intense—their bond is central to many Hawaiian legends. One famous tale tells of Hi‘iaka’s journey to fetch Pele’s lover, Lohi‘au, from Kaua‘i. During the long, perilous voyage, Hi‘iaka faces trials, defeats monsters, and even brings Lohi‘au back to life. However, Pele, overcome by jealousy and suspicion, destroys Hi‘iaka’s sacred forest and kills Lohi‘au in a fiery rage. Despite this betrayal, Hi‘iaka’s strength and forgiveness reflect her divine grace. Their relationship, a blend of love, rivalry, and spiritual power, symbolizes the balance of destruction and creation—volcanic fire and verdant life—found throughout the Hawaiian islands.

Original label (not included) on the back of the statue states :

"While journeying to his Summer Court, King Liholiho stopped at the Sacred Springs to bathe, when out of the waters rose a maiden clad only in the beauty of her nakedness. It was love at first sight! Thus began the legend of the Nude Princess."

This is a vintage item crafted in Hawaii in 1973. Made of Black Lava Stone, she stands 10 1/4" T x 4 3/4" W
