Benzoin produces a fine vanilla-almond aroma, although it is notoriously difficult to work with. The key to using this resin is to use a very small amount and apply as little heat as possible to evolve the aroma. An unpleasant, bitter, burnt plastic aroma can result if overheated or if too much is added to your mixture.
Benzoin Siam resin is related to Benzoin Sumatra, but it has a more forceful vanilla aroma. It produces much smoke when burned and can quickly fill a room with smoke. Benzoin Siam is a favorite in oerfumery for its exotic vanilla-like aroma. There is sometimes some confusion created between the various Benzoin resins (styrax sp.) and Storax resins (liquidamber sp.) because of the botanical name "styrax". Modern Storax is considered to be from the liquid amber species of trees while Ancient Storax allegedly came from styrax officinalis.
